Unkompress is a listening bar in Berlin-Kreuzberg where coffee and natural wine meet a serious interest in sound. Its hi-fi system and programme of international guest selectors attract a young, musically knowledgeable crowd who come to listen as much as to socialise.
During our six-month DJ residency, we approached our selections like a series of podcasts, building a distinct musical world around each theme. For an audience already familiar with many records, the aim was to offer something to discover and a reason to keep listening.
Unkompress recorded the sessions and published them on YouTube, making them available beyond the live setting. Listeners could return to a selection, explore unfamiliar tracks and spend more time with the music at home. The recordings connected our sets in the bar with the home-listening culture shared by much of its audience.
